3 Expectations of the Children Clear understanding of appropriate behaviour and we encourage them to take responsibility for their actions. We encourage respect for staff and peers. Children should be on time for school and lessons, have all their books and equipment school homework diary, reading book and appropriate homework books. Focus on independence i.e. being in charge of their own homework, taking responsibility for their own PE kit etc. and we ask that parents help their children in this area. Take time to look through the Homework Diaries it contains lots of information to support the children, including the behaviour policy.

4 In we introduced Thinking Maps at school. This year we plan to embed their use. Thinking Maps are tools that help organise our thinking. The eight maps each support a different type of thinking (cognitive process). The children will be taking time later in the term to teach you a map or two.

5 This year we will start the process of introducing Habits of Mind (Dispositions and Attitudes) to the children. Habits of Mind, created by Arthur L. Costa and Bena Kallick, are an identified set of sixteen problem solving, life related skills that are important for effective learning. 1. Persisting 2. Managing Impulsivity 3. Listening with Understanding and Empathy 4. Thinking Flexibly 5. Thinking about Thinking (Metacognition) 6. Striving for Accuracy 7. Questioning and Posing Problems 8. Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations 9. Thinking and Communicating with Clarity and Precision 10.Gathering Data through All Senses 11.Creating, Imagining, Innovating 12.Responding with Wonderment and Awe 13.Taking Responsible Risks 14.Finding Humour 15.Thinking Interdependently 16.Remaining Open to Continuous Learning Highlighted in yellow, are the Habits of Mind the teachers feel we should focus on. We will introduce one each halfterm. We will keep you updated in our Newsletters.

6 Mathematics Please focus on counting in 1s to 100 from any given number, forwards and backwards. As the year progresses we will move onto counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. This is skip counting. It is NOT multiplication tables. Please do not teach your child the multiplication tables or use the language incorrectly. How can you help? Do help them learn their number bonds to 10 (3+7 = 10) (10-7=3) and their number bonds to 20 (13+7 = 20). Use of the correct language. Games such as dominoes or darts, cooking, etc We will award certificates for children who can answer quick fire questions relating to their number bonds. Mrs Moreland will then present them at assembly.

7 Maths Homework A written activity in the CGP book (page given by class teacher) +2 other maths activities = 3 pieces of maths homework a week. If lost, you will need to replace them can be bought from major retailers or online. The activity your child has completed should be recorded in the white pages of your child s diary. If completed at the weekend please make a note A range of activities should be used, e.g. Counting forwards and backwards in ones, twos, fives and tens, Number bonds to ten and twenty, addition and subtraction, identifying shapes. Resources that you can use at home pasta shapes, buttons

8 Writing Transcription Not joined up writing (cursive). We will introduce cursive writing in the summer term when the individual children are ready. How can you help? Practise at home Build up fine motor skills using putty, pegs, scissors, colouring in, etc Success Criteria Composition How can you help? Speak to your child often, encourage them to build on their vocabulary and explain their thoughts and ideas Read to your child a great way to introduce new vocabulary, to discuss ideas, see how punctuation is applied and the spelling of words

10 Spelling Homework The purple spelling book contains a spelling contract. You will have had an example of this type of task (homework grid) when the children were in Reception. Given a list of words a week and complete different spelling activities in purple spelling book. Children who struggle or find this difficult, the task will be differentiated to support their needs. Tested each Monday and a new set of words given out via the School Communicator.

12 Reading The more your child is read to and reads themselves, the better the outcomes for your child. Reading together will help them with their Phonics Screening Test in June and their whole educational journey. Phonics Screening is statutory national assessment for all children in Year 1. Your child will practise all year round and will not be aware that they are doing the test as it will be part of their usual routine. A meeting later on in the year (beginning of the Spring Term) will follow to explain it fully. For now read, read, read.

13 How can you help? Ensure your child reads every night. Each day reading is to be recorded and signed on the yellow pages in their journals. These must be signed and say book finished or books will not be changed. Books are changed every Wednesday. Three books will be sent home each Wednesday. We would appreciate comments that give a clear picture of how the children have read e.g. use of expression; sounds or words they may have struggled with; definitions of difficult words etc; their enjoyment of the book. Staff will hear children read as often as possible but we need your support and input for this vital and necessary skill.

14 Expectations Reading Spelling Maths Facts School reading book Each child will have a spelling contract to complete spelling activities. Spelling test on Mondays and new words then given out. Written maths homework (CGP book) 2 additional activities throughout the week (eg. Education City, counting, number bonds, telling the time). See hand out for additional ideas. Each activity should take 10 minutes a minimum of 3 times per week (reading everyday). An adult must sign this home school diary when homework has been completed which must be in school every day In addition to this, you may find the following websites of interest:

15 Micellaneous Please provide your child with a labelled water bottle school bottles available at office. Please label all items of uniform. Pencil cases and stationery all labelled too. Certificates are also awarded for being able to do their tie and star of the week. Class mascot is sent home as a special treat. Communication We are here to help no question is too small. Y1 children come in through the front gate, as they did for Reception. Please say goodbye to your child at the gate do not come in with them well done to those parents who have already set this president thank you. If you need to deliver a message in the morning and have not put it in the children s journal, or have forgotten, please pop into the office. They will ensure we get the message. Timetable and key dates can be found on the School Communicator and website. If your child is being picked up by someone else, inform the teacher or the office.
