2 Acts 15:1-2, 22-29; Ps 67:2-3, 5-6, 8; Rv 21:10-14, 22-23; Jn 14:23-29 May 1st, 2016 Dear Friends and Parishioners, Last Saturday, St. Therese Academy had their Spring Auction Dance up at the Social Center. It was a beautiful evening with many people, who participated in this function to raise funds for our school development. I am grateful for our PGT parents and the committee, who gave their time and energy to make this a successful event for everyone to enjoy. May God continue blessing our school, families, and our children. Jesus in today s Gospel, tells His disciples that He is leaving them and that He will send them the paraclete the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will instruct and remind them of all Jesus told them. Then Jesus gave them peace as His farewell gift. Their relationship with Jesus would not end, only change. They would often be reminded of what He had said and done. I imagine that they asked themselves often, What would Jesus do? It is understandable that after Jesus ascended to the Father, the disciples were afraid and confused. They had faced a profound loss and wondered whether what they had given was enough. Their experience must have been similar to ours when we lose a parent or a loving mentor. Yet, like a deceased parent or a loving mentor, Jesus continued to live in the community of believers. They came to appreciate the gift of the Holy Spirit and began to move about freely and fearlessly, continuing the work Jesus began. That strength of Jesus is available to us today. We have received the gifts of the Holy Spirit at our baptism, communion, and confirmation. The Holy Spirit of God can be active in our lives at every moment. Today s readings are a good reminder to us of the things Jesus said and did. In the first reading, Luke offers his readers and us, as well, a sense of the early Church experience in surrendering to Mosaic traditions for example circumcision, dietary regulations, and purification rituals. By retaining their former ways and asking the gentiles to embrace them, in effect, they are saying that Jesus dying on the Cross is not enough for salvation. Aware of this situation, the church gathered in Jerusalem and as Jesus promised the gift of the Holy Spirit worked with and through them to seek the truth. The crucial question they had to face was this: what must be required of gentiles who wish to enter the Christian community? Salvation does not come from observance of the law; but, through faith in Jesus, complete surrender to Him as our way to the Father. As we leave Church today, we need to be a good follower of Jesus. We can take with us the gift of peace and share it with those around us. We can know that our grief at the loss of those who have been our strength is normal. We can know that our fear and anxiety about making the right choices were shared by Jesus disciples as well. They did a good job. So can we! Let us come to the table of our Lord who is with us in the bread and the wine. Have a wonderful week! SACRIFICIAL GIVING The collection for Sunday, April 17th: Plate: $1, Envelopes: $12, Online: $1, The collection for Sunday, April 24th: Plate: $1, Envelopes: $11, Online: $1, Fr. Michael M. Pham READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Acts 16:11-15; Ps 149:1b-6a, 9b; Jn 15: :4a Tuesday: 1 Cor 15:1-8; Ps 19:2-5; Jn 14:6-14 Wednesday: Acts 17:15, :1; Ps 148:1-2, 11-14; Jn 16:12-15 Thursday: Acts 1:1-11; Ps 47:2-3, 6-9; Eph 1:17-23 Friday: Acts 18:9-18; Ps 47:2-7; Jn 16:20-23 Saturday: Acts 18:23-28; Ps 47:2-3, 8-10; Jn 16:23b-28 Sunday: Acts 7:55-60; Ps 97:1-2, 6-7, 9; Rv 22:12-14, 16-17, 20; Jn 17:20-26 Saint Francis Prayer Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
